          Early Life and Education

          Jorge Bolet, an American pianist and conductor of Cuban descent, was born in Havana on November 15, 1914.

          His brother, Alberto Bolet, was also a renowned conductor. Bolet completed his studies at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where his teachers included Leopold Godowsky, Moritz Rosenthal, Josef Hofmann, and Fritz Reiner.

          He also taught at Curtis from 1939-1942.

          Breakthrough and Army Service

          In 1937, Bolet won the prestigious Naumburg Young Artists Prize. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, where he conducted the Japanese premiere of Arthur Sullivan's comic opera "The Mikado" while stationed in occupied Japan.
