Leeuwenhoek was the son of Philips Thoniszoon, a basket-maker, and Margriet Jacobsdochter van den Berch. He took his surname ( “Lion’s Corner” ) from the corner house near the Leeuwenpoort ( “Lion’s Gate” ) at Delft, which was owned by his father.
